Arsenal have been named as a suitable potential future destination for PSV Eindhoven winger and reported Gunners transfer target Cody Gakpo.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio believes that a Premier League move would be “the right” one for the 23-year-old.
Gakpo for Arsenal?
Speaking to Wettfreunde (via Sport Witness), Di Martzio said of Gakpo: “I know him very well. He’s a very, very good player. When you play in the Eredivisie with PSV and Ajax, you obviously learn intensity and quality, so the Premier League is the right move for players like him. I think Manchester United, Arsenal or Tottenham.
“Tottenham, I think, need other players like him to have a deeper squad and more managerial choices. One of those teams. It depends on what PSV want for him. I think Manchester United or Arsenal, or Tottenham, for that matter, are the right projects for a quality and intense player like him.
“Of course, it’s still too early to say if there is a deal or if the clubs are talking to each other. We are in October, and there is also a World Cup, so all transfers will be postponed. Each club will wait until the World Cup and see what happens.”
Gakpo shooting the lights out
Having made 216 appearances for PSV across their senior and youth teams, the winger has scored 82 goals and delivered 55 assists.
In 10 Eredivisie games this season, Gakpo has found the net nine times and supplied seven assists for his teammates, showcasing the very impressive campaign he has had so far. Indeed, his goal tally rises to 13 when other competitions are included – three more than Arsenal’s joint-top scorers Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus combined.
Hailed as an “outstanding” player by journalist Josh Bunting, the £7.4k-per-week attacker is definitely someone at whom Edu and Arsenal should be looking to bring in and embed into Mikel Arteta’s squad, given his clear attacking talent.
Assuming that the likes of United and Tottenham, as Di Marzio mentioned, would also be interested in signing the 23-year-old, it seems likely that Edu would need to work quickly to secure the winger’s signature, which we feel should be one of his top priorities moving forward.
