Arsenal’s four major signings, none of which were followed by any significant departures, have bolstered the squad and have filled fans with optimism that this year, we are finally not “two or three players short” for a proper title challenge!
Granit Xhaka was confirmed before the transfer window started, all the way back in May, and after impressing at the Euros, many were keen to see how he would fair in England.
Rob Holding, the second signing, was received with mixed reception – a young English centre-half from a team that had just gone down to League One wasn’t the answer to Arsenal’s centre-back injury crisis, which began in July as Gabriel and Per Mertesacker both got injured.
This was bolstered by Shokrodan Mustafi, a German Internation signed for a hefty fee towards the end of the transfer window.
He was joined by Spanish striker Lucas Perez, who scored 17 goals in La Liga last season and was expected to provide depth after Welbeck got injured.
