Former Reading manager and current Arsenal scout Brian McDermott has ruled out Arsene Wenger spending in January unless it is ‘absolutely necessary’
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, McDermott said that none of the top quality players that Arsenal would be aiming for will be available in the January transfer window.
The manager [Wenger] won’t spend unless he thinks it’s absolutely necessary.
The scouting structure at Arsenal is phenomenal. We all know who the top strikers in the world are. Can you get them to come? They won’t be available in January that’s an absolute certainty.

McDermott began his playing career with Arsenal in 1979, and in a five-year spell with the club, made 61 appearances and scored 12 goals. After struggling to break into the first team, he was sold to Oxford United in 1984.
He took up his scouting positon with Arsenal in October last year, having been sacked from his managerial role at Leeds in May for the second time that season, after the takeover of eccentric businessman Massimo Celino. In the time between his departure and present day Leeds have had six different managers.
Arsenal’s next game is away at the Liberty Stadium, where they face Swansea City.
