Arsenal will this weekend become the first club in the Premier League to donate to the refugees currently trying to escape the wars in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East and Africa, as European football increasingly makes effort to help those fleeing.
The club have decided to donate some of the funds from ticket sales for the game this Saturday, Arsene Wenger confirmed in his news conference today.
For the game against Stoke, for every ticket sold, £1 will be donated to victims of the Syrian crisis.
This will be followed by Arsenal’s participation in UEFA’s plan to donate £1 from every ticket sold for the first Champions League group game of the season, which every side in the competition has agreed to. UEFA hopes to raise around £2m from this.
Arsenal join several other top European clubs in making an effort the help those involved in the crisis, with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and AS Roma among the others to pledge support, but is currently alone in the Premier League in taking unilateral action to help.
